Msingi wa Kiswahili 5 kinatimiza kikamilifu mahitaji na masharti yote ya silabasi mpya iliyoanza kutekelezwa shuleni kuanzia 2003. Toleo hili jipya, ambalo ni kubwa zaidi kuliko la kwanza, limepanuliwa iii kumpa mwanafunzi uwezo mkubwa wa kujiimarisha katika lugha ya Kiswahili. Toleo hill:
- Â Linampa mwanafunzi nafasi ya kusikiliza lugha ya Kiswahili na kumpa mazoezi ya kuisema.
- Â Linamwezesha mwanafunzi kutambua kusoma kwa haraka na kwa njia nyepesi, bila ya matatizo.
- Lina mazoezi ya kupanua msamiati hatua kwa hatua na kumwezesha mwanafunzi kuutumia msamiati huu, wa kiwango cha Darasa la Tano.
- Â Lina mazoezi ya kufunza sarufi kwa kutumia vitu halisi, picha na vitendo.
- Â Lina hadithi zenye kuvutia na zinazowapa wanafunzi shauku ya kusoma.
- Linashughulikia kikamilifu maswala ibuka kama vile mazingira, afya na usafi, haki za watoto, usawa wa kijinsia na maadili.

Waandishi wa kitabu hiki wana tajriba pana ya ufundishaji na utahini wa somo la Kiswahili. Kwa mwalimu, mzazi au mlezi, kitabu hiki chenye mazoezi ya marudio na majaribio ya mitihani ni nyenzo muhimu ya kumboresha na kumwandaa mwanafunzi kwa mitihani ya somo la Kiswahili.
